CEDAR RAPIDS, IA, June 6, 2019 — Paul Brundell of Allan Custom Homes has completed the first Zero Energy Ready Homes in Cedar Rapids, making high performance housing an option for area homebuyers. The U.S. Department of Energy developed the Zero Energy Ready Home program to encourage builders to construct highly energy efficient homes designed to last hundreds of years. Allan Custom Homes is the first builder in Cedar Rapids to take part in the innovative national program.

Zero Energy Ready Homes are cost-effective, high performance residences built to provide a healthy living environment with a level of energy efficiency, comfort, and durability unparalleled in today’s marketplace. But if you only looked at the building exterior and the listing price, these homes wouldn’t seem any different from your average new home. The difference comes from the construction, insulation and integration of technology, which allows for cleaner air, more even temperatures, and a quieter home. Each certified home is so energy efficient that a small solar electric system can easily offset most, if not all, of the owner’s annual energy consumption.

Every Zero Energy Ready Home must meet the program’s specifications for advanced construction practices and technologies. Program certifications are issued by independent verifiers. Both halves of Allan Custom Homes’ new condominiums at 700 & 702 Dorchester Place NE, Cedar Rapids have been independently certified by Preferred Energy Consultants of Anamosa, IA.

Allan Custom Homes is a full-service custom home builder, designer and remodeler serving the Cedar Rapids area since 2003. Paul Brundell, company founder and president, believes that a quality home is an energy efficient home, leading him to earn designations as a Certified Green Professional, ENERGY STAR Partner, and now as a Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home partner.

“Energy efficient homes aren’t just good for the environment, they’re good for your wallet too,” says Brundell. “Our new Dorchester condos will provide buyers an estimated $1,241 annually in energy savings over a minimum code compliant house, which in many cases could equal a monthly mortgage payment on this home.”

The properties are located in northeast Cedar Rapids and one of the homes has already been sold. Interested buyers can also apply for a Green Mortgage, a mortgage program that helps buyers qualify for a larger mortgage in order to afford an energy efficient home.

Thoughtful Design Comes to Life

The couple we built this stunning house for are fans of the Prairie School style with its horizontal lines, minimalist approach and integration with the natural landscape. They were active participants in the planning and design process, which took the better part of a year. Start to finish, this was a challenging, satisfying project.

We concepted around a two-story great room with huge windows and tall sliding doors. The home is set into the ground to offset the great room’s height and to help the house fit with the setting. The living spaces are an artful blend of clean lines and uncluttered comfort. Everywhere there are fine views of the wooded property. Click for the full profile.

Added Space, Enhanced Quality

The family in this comfortable Marion home needed more practical living area and wanted to better enjoy their park-like backyard. In response to their wishes, we created a new all-seasons room, an ample laundry room and a new cedar deck with a yard-level patio below. We also updated some of the adjoining spaces to match and complement the new construction. Click for the full profile.
